Don’t Look Up

Ignorance is unsustainable, for its continuous celebration will lead to the ruin of both the individual and the society. Society today is threatened with a crisis of reality, threatened when 2 + 2 = 5—à la Orwell—becomes a viable truth. To insist on the reality that 2 + 2 = 4 frightens the ignorant few while placing the lives of those who embrace truth and science in danger. Raising consciousness leads to harm, if not death, at the hands of the ignorant who are made afraid by manipulative politicians. Take the example of Dr. Allison Berry, a trained biostatistician and epidemiologist who served as the local health officer in Port Angeles, Washington. When the Delta variant spiked in her community, she implemented a mask mandate and ordered vaccination for indoor dining. The response was swift as protestors showed up at her home. Calls were made to attack her “on sight,” warnings that “we are coming for you,” as an appeal was made to reinstitute public hangings.54 Dr. Berry’s experience was not an isolated case. Think of the plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer by six Euromales of a Michigan militia because of her efforts to contain the spread of Covid. We find ourselves, as a people, on the threshold of a violent cultural revolt against reality.

If the core message of Jesus is the giving of life, specifically, “I have come to give life and give life abundantly” (John 10:10), then anything that leads to death signals an antichrist ideology. Which ideology, which worldview contributes to the flourishing of life, and which toward a culture of death? Everyone may have a right to be as ignorant as they want, but what we are witnessing today is the imposition of this ignorance upon public policy that only expands the insatiable hunger of the Grim Reaper. Ignorance, and the lies that it fosters, kills. And the political party that has become fertile ground for these lies and conspiracies to take root has become the party of death. Take the Covid pandemic as an example of the signs of the times.

The celebration of ignorance was best demonstrated when Dr. Anthony Fauci employed the most advanced and reliable science and most updated projections available to forecast a credible unfolding of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite his decades of experience as an immunologist, he was dismissed as a hoax, a “global fraud” by Fox television personality Tucker Carlson. The character assassination was designed to create the illusion in the minds of Euroamericans that Fauci’s scientific conclusion was no more valid than the disinformation advanced about the virus, lies advanced by those who should know better. Even though a wealth of evidence exists that treating the virus with medicine used to combat malaria is both ineffective and dangerous, celebrity physician and eventual Senate candidate Dr. Oz became the remedy’s chief promoter on Fox News. Such disinformation, along with homemade remedies and the power of prayer, contributed to over seven hundred thousand US Covid deaths by October 2021, surpassing the 1918 influenza pandemic.
